This galaxy forms a famous triplet in Leo together with M65 and M66.
It is deformed in the outer regions, possibly due to gravitational interactions with the other 2 galaxies. A sattelite galaxy can be seen south of the center which is similar to the magellanic cloud in our galaxy.
It is strange, that Messier did not see this galaxy so close to M66 and M65 although it is a little dimmer in surface brightness.
